DQS4 Received!

 

Last night I came home to this beautiful quilt (click for bigger)!  It is from Lynda in Australia.  I absolutely love it!  Thank you so much, Lynda!

DQS4 Complete

 

I finshed this quilt right on the deadline... Phew!  I had a tough time with the binding, and had to un-sew and redo a few parts of it.  In the end, I'm happy with how it turned out.

Just to sum up the details:
The quilt was originally inspired by this quilt from the February 2008 issue of Patchwork Quilt Tsushin (I changed the circles to hexagons since I don't know how to do applique):

Some of the fabrics were in my stash, and the rest (including the border and all of the indigos) were from The City Quilter.  I used Gutermann thread for both the piecing and quilting.  The batting is Quilter's Dream wool from Purl Patchwork.  I cut the 3" binding strips and did a double-fold binding.  All of the piecing, quiting and binding were done by hand.

I used MS Paint to design the label, which I then printed onto Printable Treasures fabric with my inkjet.

This quilt went to Lynne in New Hampshire - I hope she likes it!

Quick Progress Update

The blocks are all pieced, and some of the sashing is done...

Fabrics have been chosen!

My partner "loves color," so I hope these are colorful enough!  My Asian prints are the brightest, most colorful prints I have.  My Civil War fabrics are all kind of muted (except for the reds, but those all went into my pentagons quilt).  And all my retro/modern type fabrics are green (how did I not notice that I kept buying greens?).

OK, I'm off to make some templates...

I got my partner!

I've been checking out my DQS4 partner's blog, and...   I don't think she'll like any of the ideas I've been having so far (see 2 posts down).  Before I got my assignment, I had nothing to go on but my own taste.  However, she has very different tastes from me in both colors and layouts.  So it was back to the drawing board!

The good news is, I've got my new design all ready to go.  It's something I would never have thought to make before, so I'm glad of the difference in tastes!  I've got a "virtual quilt" of my new design all worked up in MS Paint, but I'm not going to post it.  I'll let it be a little bit of a mystery for a while :)

For my DQS4 Partner...

 I just thought I'd post more info about my likes and dislikes, in case there's not enough in my reply to the questionnaire.

1. I love all techniques.  Hand or machine piecing or quilting, applique, whatever.  I happen to hand piece and quilt because I don't own or know how to use a machine, and I haven't learned applique yet (although I plan to) - not because I like non-machine techniques any better.

2. I like most colors.  My favorite color is vermilion, followed pretty closely by mossy green.  I like all muted greens (Kelly and emerald not so much though), all blues and reds, golden yellows, lilac, wine, cool browns, and most neutrals.  I have some favorite color combos too - indigo blue with chartreuse, mossy green with lilac or with Civil War pink, yellow with Civil War pink, tan with aqua, red with aqua, brown with dove grey, and blue with orange.  I have nothing against primary colors, jewel tones, or pastels, as long as they are a part of something else - I don't really like something that is all jewel tones, or all pastels, or all primaries.

3. I'm not a big fan of novelty fabrics or cottage florals or "country" looking fabrics.  But I like 1800's reproductions, paisleys, Asian prints, toiles, Kaffe Fassett, Amy Butler, Joel Dewberry.  I like some early 1900's reproductions too - mostly the ones with tiny floral or geometric prints.

Ideas

I can't wait to get my DQS4 partner assignment, so I can choose a layout and my mind can stop racing.  Here are a few of the ideas that have been going through my head...
