I am completely obsessed over the quilts I have planned out (but not started). Obsessed as in losing sleep, and productivity slippage at work. Also, I keep changing my mind about what I want to do.
For instance, I was going to make a queen-size Snowballs quilt out of my Civil War blues. But now I'm thinking, why? First of all, I wouldn't put it on my bed. The thought of my husband sweating on it, or my son vomiting on it (yeah, we're doing the family bed thing), makes me want to pass out. Also, I prefer a duvet cover to a quilt or bedspread, as it gets me out of having to use a flat sheet and thus makes making the bed a snap. Second of all, I piece and quilt by hand, and I am slow as dirt. So I'm going to make a lap size quilt instead. Another bonus of this decision is that I am out of the "collection" phase for that size - I've already got enough fabric!
I've also decided to downsize the blues-and-browns Inner City quilt. It was going to be a large lap size (about 63 x 75), but I've decided to go with a smaller lap size (about 51 x 61). I mean, if it's going to be a lap quilt, what's the benefit of a large lap size over a regular lap size? As long as it covers you, who cares? And now I need only 147 fabrics for the top, and not 243. That's a big savings in "collection time" for a very small change in the result.
I've been looking at my Kaffe Fassett and Asian print charm squares, trying to envision the final Chain Links quilt. The sad truth, however, is that I don't like the way those two kinds of fabric look together. I'm going to stick with Asian prints only for the Chain Links quilt. I've only got about 70 of those, so I'm prolonging the collection time here, but there's nothing I can do about that. I've got about 100 Kaffe Fassett charms, which I'm going to make a simple half-square triangle lap quilt out of. I have some solid off-white that I'll use for the top half of each square, and I'll use the KF fabric for the bottom half. I have just enough to make a 52" x 60" lap quilt, so that's what I'll make.
I haven't changed my mind (well, not since my last post) about either the Whirligigs or the solid blues-and-neutrals quilts. Although I may just downsize Whirligigs. I was going to use 242 fabrics to make a 52" square wall quilt. But 162 fabrics will get me a 44" square wall quilt - I may just do that instead. Depends how much patience I have for collecting.
I've also thought up a new quilt. I've been wanting to try both freeform piecing and applique, and I've come up with a design for a small wallhanging (only 16" x 24") that uses both these techniques.
Hey, maybe one of these days I'll finish something and maybe post a picture! Actually, just today I finished the third border strip for my future niece's quilt, so I can sew that on this weekend. No pics until the top is finished, though. :P
